Medical Insurance Re-imbursement For Cranial Prosthesis

Your Health Insurance May Cover the Cost of Your Hair Replacement Wig Unit

If you suffer from full or partial hair loss as a result of a medical related condition such as alopecia, chemotherapy treatment, lupus, trichotillomania, etc., then all or part of the cost of your hair replacement unit may be covered by your medical insurance provider. Many insurance companies will cover between 80% -100% of the cost of a "full cranial prosthesis." Cranial Prosthesis is the medical term used to describe various devices used for the replacement of hair on the head.  The hair loss full lace wigs that we sell fall into this category.  It is important that when communicating with your insurance provider that you always refer to your hair replacement unit as a "full cranial prosthesis" because if you request coverage for a "wig" then your claim will be denied.

Instructions For Obtaining Medical Insurance Re-imbursement Of Your Hair Replacement Unit

Note: Some insurance companies will require you to pay upfront and then be reimbursed, others will pay for your prosthesis upfront.

  1. Call Your Medical Insurance Provider's customer service number to see if your policy covers a "full cranial prosthesis" for medical hair loss.  If it is covered, ask them to explain their procedure and what documents you are required to submit to them for obtaining payment for the full cranial prosthesis.

  2. Obtain a prescription from your physician for a "full cranial prosthesis" not a wig. Ask your physician to also write a letter explaining hair loss and its effects and have him state that it is not simply for cosmetic reasons but for emotional well being as well.

  3. Complete any other insurance forms required by your medical insurance provider and be sure they are signed by your physician if required.

  4. Follow the instructions that you were given by your health insurance provider for submitting the prescription and any additional required documents so that you can obtain payment.  You will automatically receive a Order Confirmation/Receipt sent to your email address for a "cranial prosthesis" from us when your place your order online.

  5. Keep copies of all of your documentation and invoices for tax exempt purposes.  Portions of unpaid items by insurance may be tax deductible.

IMPORTANT: We DO NOT process insurance claims or accept prescriptions.

Be sure to ALWAYS refer to your hair replacement unit as  a Cranial Prosthesis when communicating with your insurance provider!  NEVER refer to it as a WIG!
